In case you are dead and haven’t noticed, we are fast approaching Valentine’s Day. Literally billions will be spent on cards, chocolates, roses and other gifts as an expression of love during this holiday. Some will use the occasion to propose marriage, others will use the holiday as the day for their wedding ceremony. And yet with all of this talk on the subject of love, so few know what love is really all about.
As the church, we do know what love is, and have received the greatest expression of love ever given, as Scripture teaches us that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for another (John 15:13). The cross, of course, is that ultimate demonstration of love. Can I ask then: how can the born again, redeemed children of God, not express that same love one to another? Clearly we are told that the world takes notice that we truly are Christians when we love one another (John 13:35). Yet I see Christians everywhere who are “territorial”; envious, cantankerous and judgmental toward one another. When will the Christian community begin to lay down their lives for their brethren, rather than expect the brethren to lay down their lives for “me”? This Valentine’s Day, while you are finding a way to express your love to your spouse or someone with whom you are in a relationship, don’t neglect to express your love to God. And certainly the best way to do that is to express love to your fellow Christian…even those with whom you disagree on certain things. “"'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'” (Matthew 22:37-39)
Youth Bible Study: On Wednesday evenings we are enjoying a follow-up Bible study from the movie, “To Save a Life”.
